70% of top mortgages from building societiesMortgage customers should consider building societies as a source of good remortgage deals, according to a new survey.

Research by comparison website Moneyfacts.co.uk revealed that building societies currently offer the majority of the best products on the market, including those from banks.

The website's findings concluded that 70 per cent of the top 250 home loans come from building societies like the Nationwide and the Harpenden.

Its research was compiled from the entire mortgage market of fixed, discounted and variable rates over various time periods.

Mortgage expert at Moneyfacts Julia Harris said: "It is shocking to see that so few of the top priced mortgage deals are offered by the largest mortgage lenders."

She suggested that although customer needs varied widely, the majority of borrowers would find mortgage deals from building societies and smaller lenders "are winning hands down".

Recent figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders show that there was a fall in lending during September, although remortgaging figures were slightly up on the same time last year.
