Personal inflation levels still a problem

personal inflation still a problemThe Office of National Statistics (ONS) may have today revealed that consumer price inflation remained at 2.1 per cent in November, but Britons themselves are facing up to higher prices across all age groups, it has been suggested.

Higher food prices affected all demographics last month, a survey from Alliance Trust has found, though it is those at opposite ends of the scale who may be most in danger of ending up with a bad credit score due to affordability issues.

The under-30s and the over-75s both saw their inflation rates rise to 2.6 per cent on the month, fuelled by rises in the costs of rent, education and energy, according to the organisation.

"Our study shows the extent to which the impact of inflation can differ from what the government's headline figure suggests, with big variations across different age groups," said Shona Dobbie, head of the Alliance Trust Research Centre.

"Since our study began in 2003, the elderly have consistently suffered the highest levels of inflation. Over the past few months, they have been matched by the young.

The ONS also reported today that retail price inflation rose from 4.2 per cent to 4.3 per cent on the month in November.
